Sports photography usually requires you to be able to get
fairly close to the action: often difficult at major events without being
an accredited professional photographer. However plenty of stirring action
takes place at the lower levels of every sport, where skills and action
can be every bit as good, and even if the big names aren't there, perhaps
those participating one day will be stars too. And it is usually easy
for the amateur photographer to be close to the action at such events.
The events I photograph are sports I enjoy watching, and may often be
events in which friends or family are participating: for example the
preponderance of women's rugby is a result of my daughter's participation
- before she broke her knee Gemma used to play for Murrayfield Wanderers,
the top Scottish women's team, and occasionally for Scotland 'A'.
